BAD BUNKERS? TORN LINERS? USE THE Better BILLY BUNKER Method
Improve Drainage - Eliminate Cloth Liners - Eliminate Sand Erosion - Eliminate Sand Contamination "The Better Billy Bunker Method is The Best Method to build a bunker I have seen. This method improves my original Billy Bunker Spec by eliminating the potential torn cloth geotextile liner which causes sand contamination. The Better Better Billy Bunker Method improves what has been the best bunker construction spec for 25 years. I recommend this method for the longest bunker life expectancy". -Billy Fuller
About "The Billy Bunker"The original Billy Bunker method was tagged by the industry for former Augusta National Golf Club's superintendent Billy Fuller, who invented this bunker construction specification in 1981. The design improved a bunker's drainage and playability by using drainage pipe, a layer of pea gravel, a cloth liner and quality bunker sand. It has been installed in over 1000 golf courses in the world! The method includes the following: The method worked well on bunkers and has become the preferred bunker specification for many golf courses owners, architects and contractors. The weakness is in the liner. Many companies have entered the bunker liner market with liners that vary in thickness, strength or uniqueness. Some allow water to penetrate vertically and horizontally. These liners can work adequately in flat bunkers where managing sand depth is relatively easy and erosion from rain events is minimal. However, when liners are utilized in bunker bottoms, we often receive complaints regarding bunker raking machines ripping and exposing the liner. On steep slopes bunkers sand tends to slide down the slopes of these geotextiles liners. This is called a radial slide. See what a radial slide is and how this method fixes the problem. (PowerPoint in PDF format) Once the sand becomes thin on slopes, traffic, golf clubs and hand and powered mechanical rakes catch, snag, pull up and often tear out the liners. When the liners are torn, the soil and stone under the liners are exposed. This results in contamination of the bunker sand. It is not uncommon for snagging and tearing to occur within the first year of the life of the bunker. The cycle of sand coming down the slopes and being contaminated with rock and clay greatly reduce the bunker's life expectancy. WHY? The bunker sand begins to function poorly once contaminated with soil, rock and clay. The pore space of the sand fill with clay and drainage declines. The sand also loses its original color. After numerous erosion cycles a new bunker's condition changes rapidly and golfers complain about poor playing conditions. NOW THE SOLUTION!!! - The "Better" Billy Bunker Method We have eliminated any potential for fabric tearing or contamination of soil by using a special binder that creates a porous gravel liner. Our method uses locally found pea gravel (like the ones for USGA Greens Construction). PLUS our liner has a 10 year warranty!* see The Bunker Construction/ Renovation Presentation ( PDF Powerpoint) See The History of Billy Bunker and THE ORIGINAL SPECIFICATION See WHY -Videos of Our Bunker Profile Test Model: Here
